MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C. - Operations Security, commonly known as OPSEC, is a process to control and protect critical unclassified information about a mission or specific activity from an adversary who would use it to do harm to service members and their families.

This includes assessing the potential risk if that information is compromised and reviewing countermeasures used to deter the collection of critical information.

Critical information can be anything, including flight plans, command strength and degradation to personnel or equipment. Any crumb of information can be used as a piece of a puzzle.

As per Marine Corps Order 3070.2, all Marine Corps units battalion-level or higher, are required to establish and maintain an OPSEC program.

Gunnery Sgt. Charles Wolf, Headquarters Marine Corps head OPSEC coordinator, provided OPSEC training to Marines from Marine Aircraft Groups 26 and 29 responsible for their respective commands’ OPSEC program, May 21.

“The course was specifically engineered for the units’ OPSEC officer/program manager,” said Wolf.

According to Wolf, the class helps identify critical information within the respective commands, analyze threats and intelligence collection capabilities. These can be human, imagery and open sources. He also helps identify a command’s vulnerabilities to those collection disciplines.

The program allows OPSEC officers to reduce indicators and devise countermeasures to prevent adversaries from collecting, processing and acting on the information they have obtained.

Wolf advises Marines and families to not discuss current and future operations in public places or on public forums, such as Facebook and Twitter, or to complete strangers, especially people who seem overly interested in what they may have to say.

“OPSEC is a paramount program that requires each Marine and family member to limit the amount of information available to the adversary,” said Wolf. “The goal of the OPSEC program is to minimize the amount of information that the adversary can collect. Something as simple as awareness training can be enough to open the eyes of each Marine and family member.”
