FORT LEE, Va. - Air Force Maj. Rob Marshall, Defense Contract Management Agency Osprey functional test pilot, accomplished a goal few others attempt. Marshall and members of the USAF Seven Summits team reached the pinnacle of their quest on May 19 to become the first military team to scale all the world’s famous seven summits. The culminating event was the ascent to the top of Mount Everest.
A post on the team’s blog shared the accomplishment with the world: “Just received the call we’ve all been waiting for from Maj. Rob Marshall, leader of the USAF 7 Summits team, reporting that he and three other team members reached the summit of Mount Everest at approximately 0520 Nepal time. Fifty years after the first American boots stood on top of the world, the first American military team has followed in those footsteps.”
At each of the summits of each peak they climbed, the team did pushups to celebrate the accomplishment. Everest was no exception according to the blog: “Rob Marshall knocked out an incredible 30 pushups in 30 seconds, at 29,000 feet, without oxygen … spread the word to all your friends and fellow airman: the USAF flag is flying from the highest of the high ground.”
Last October, Marshall took a break from flying Ospreys to conquer Mount Kosciuszko in Australia. To conquer Everest, Marshall began his quest March 31 when he arrived in Nepal and linked up with the other members of the team.
