Afghan National Army EOD clearing the way

    GHAZNI PROVINCE, AFGHANISTAN

    05.15.2013

Story by 2nd Lt. Reanna Johnson

    8th Engineer Battalion

GHAZNI PROVINCE, Afghanistan – An Afghan explosive ordnance disposal team took the lead in eliminating two enemy improvised explosive devices along a key coalition roadway, May 15, enabling the 40th Mobility Augmentation Company, Task Force Trojan Horse, to continue on their mission.

Explosive ordnance disposal is unlike any other job in the military. EOD teams are responsible for the removing of improvised, military and commercial explosives from the battlefield. The training required is extensive, but their contribution to the war in Afghanistan is irreplaceable.

With the ongoing shift in responsibility from ISAF to Afghan-led operations, the Afghan National Army continues to grow and develop as a valued partner for coalition forces, and a sustainable force for the future of Afghanistan. With partnerships growing, U.S. soldiers truly begin to see the benefits of their Afghan teammates alongside them.

First Platoon, 40th MAC, was on a routine patrol when they received a tip of a possible improvised explosive device up the road. At this time, Afghan EOD soldiers of 3rd Brigade, 203rd Corps, arrived on site and took control of the area.

The ANA unit EOD successfully found the IED that was reported to the U.S. forces. They were also able to locate a hidden secondary IED along the road, as well as the intended enemy firing position.
Once the IEDs were located, the Afghan EOD team successfully blew the two explosive devices, rendered the area safe, and cleared the way for their coalition partners to continue on their mission.

“They definitely got the IEDs off the road,” said 1st Lt. Joshua Fosher, platoon leader for 1st Platoon, when asked about the success of the mission.

First Platoon witnessed the ANA EOD team clear the complex IED from the road, continued their patrol unharmed, and were thankful for the help from their Afghan partners.
