MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — Marines with 2nd Tank Battalion received Purple Heart Medals during a May 14 ceremony aboard Camp Lejeune acknowledging their valor and dedication to service.
In addition to the Purple Heart, awards such as the Navy Marine Corps Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal were awarded during the ceremony.
The Marines receiving awards included: 1st Lt. Andrew Yeary, Master Sgt. Richard Layton, Chief Petty Officer Marty Stanisz, Staff Sgt. Jamal Yousef, Sgt. Curtis Shafer, Sgt. Sammy Cooper, Lance Cpl. Joseph Logue, Lance Cpl. Nicholas Matarese and Petty Officer 3rd Class Jared.
One of the awardees, Sergeant Guensly Dorisca, a section leader with 3rd platoon, Bravo Company, 2nd Tank Battalion, received the Purple Heart Medal for wounds received in action, January 15, 2013.
Dorisca remembers the incident quite vividly.
“My last patrol in country, we were moving south from Shir Ghazi to (another operating base) in Afghanistan,” said Dorisca.
Dorisca and his platoon were showing the area to a new unit when, around 11a.m., a blast went off.
“The [improvised explosive device] was on the left side of the tank. I was on the loader hatch of the tank. I remember getting out of the tank and trying to get the tank out of the kill zone. Later, I was (medically evacuated) back to (Camp) Leatherneck,” said Dorisca.
He suffered a concussion and later found out he may have had blood clots in his lungs.
The Marines have a long tradition of putting themselves in harms way to uphold the mission and to protect fellow service members during combat operations.
“When people stand out, they get recognized,” said Brig. Gen. James W. Lukeman, commanding general, 2nd Marine Division. “The fun part of the job is being able to recognize the exceptional performance of Marines and sailors like we did today.”
Purple Heart Medals are awarded to those Marines who have received wounds in combat. Although recognizing the Marines is exciting, awards such as the Purple Heart aren’t what they strive for, Lukeman said.
