BAGHDAD - The Camp Victory Heat put the flames to their Camp Liberty rivals 15-7 in a clincher of a three-game series May 29 at Staff Sgt. Cassell Field.

While the Liberty Ladies came out swinging and secured an early lead, the Heat struck back with a vengeance, with Paula Martin, Leigh Williams and Lauren Gobar all crossing the plate in the first inning.

The second and third innings were scoreless on both sides, but the fourth saw the teams almost evenly matched. The Heat managed to creep ahead of the Ladies with runs from Veronica Regalbuti, Tamara Taylor and Sarah Halick.

The Heat maintained their hard fought lead in the fifth and managed to pull even farther ahead. Martin started the scoring before Leigh Williams made a run and paved the way for Lauren Gobar homerun. The Heat finished off the inning with runs by Kelly O'Conner and Regalbuti.

Martin, Williams, Halik and Karen Kirkpatrick drove in two more runs.

The Ladies fought back in the final moments of the game scoring two runs before the Victory Heat finally consumed the Ladies' hopes of winning.

Players from both sides of the contest expressed their thoughts on the final game in the softball showdown, which had seen them split the first two games.

Taylor, Heat infielder, who scored two runs in the second game of the series and an additional one in the clinch, expressed confidence in her team's abilities. "I think we're going to win," Taylor said. "I think we're ready."

Taylor's coach echoed her thoughts before the final game began.

"I believe we're going to win," said Heat coach Tony Williams. "Our first game we played with only eight players. I want to look at the positive."

On the opposite side of the field, the Liberty Ladies voiced their hopes for a win.
"I'm hoping we can pull out a win," said Erika Mumphord. "We won the first game. They beat us in the second. We're trying to keep them from doing that again."

Ladies coach Jonathon Shackleford said all his players needed to do to secure a win was hit the ball.

"They just need to settle down and play the game they know how to and just hit the ball," he said.

After the game, Williams summed up his thoughts.

"I think it started off a little slow," he said. "Both teams came out a little excited. Once they got into the second inning, both teams relaxed and started to hit balls."
    Williams credited Shackleford's coaching.

"They came out aggressively," Williams said. "He brought his best players. They came to play. They got the first run on us."

He credited his coaching staff for Victory's win.

"I think the coaching staff was one of the deciding factors," he said. "We had three guys who really knew the game of softball - Romulus Lopez, Shawn Wilkerson and Dudley Hunt."

Ladies starting pitcher Wileen Grable said her focus in playing was less on dominating the opposition and more in enjoying the game.

"I just come out here and have fun," Grable said.
