STRATTON AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, SCOTIA, N.Y. - The New York Air National Guard's 109th Logistics Readiness Squadron's Small Air Terminal detachment has been named best in the Air National Guard for 2012.
The detachment received the "Air Reserve Component Air Transportation Activity of the Year" for 2102.
The award recognizes the work the 50-person 109th Small Air Terminal Flight did during 2011-2012 in processing people and cargo for movement on the C-130s and LC -130s operated by the 109th Airlift Wing.
During that period the airmen supported combat operations with airmen on the ground in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the flight also resupplied missions to science stations in Greenland and Antarctica. They also assisted in resupply missions the 109th Airlift Wing conducted in support of New York's emergency response to Hurricane Sandy.
The Small Air Terminal team coordinated the movement of 1,000 tons of cargo and 3,000 passengers during 2012.
The team was also recognized for improvements in their training program airmen need to follow in order to be fully qualified in the Small Air Terminal career field. The members of the 109th Small Air Terminal were also successful in reducing overall costs of operations during the year as well.
Finally the citizen airmen of the detachment got involved in their community, volunteering time during local food drives, and being part of the 109th Airlift Wing's high school outreach program.
"It is inspiring to see such a high degree of professionalism given the operational demands placed upon these airmen," said Lt. Col. Jeffrey Hedges, the commander of the 109th Logistics Readiness Squadron. "It drives us all toward a higher bar of success."
