FARYAB PROVINCE, Afghanistan - 5th Special Operations Kandak (SOK) Commandos killed 13 and wounded eight insurgents while conducting a clearing operation in Kwajah Kinti village, Qaisar district, Faryab province, May 9.

Nearly 20 heavily armed insurgents attacked the 5th SOK soldiers with AK-47 rifles and rocket propelled grenades.

"We will continue fighting the enemy in order to restore peace in Faryab," said Lt. Col. Mohammad Bassir Bayat, 5th SOK Commander. "The people should not live in fear because the Afghan Security Forces will protect them."

Soldiers from the Afghan National Army's 209th Corps and the 5th SOK partnered to reestablish security after insurgents attacked several Afghan police checkpoints, April 22.

"We will not leave until we clear out the insurgents that are occupying this village," said Lt. Col. Bayat. "We will clean up Kwajah Kinti."

Afghan forces defended the village with no civilian casualties and no reported structural damage.
