GHAZNI PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Afghan Local Police killed 10 insurgents, including a Taliban leader, while defending a checkpoint against approximately 30 insurgents in Qara Bagh district, May 10.
The insurgents attacked the checkpoint before dawn on Friday, armed with AK-47 rifles and heavy machine guns.
The checkpoint’s ALP immediately notified the Operations Coordination Center-District (OCC-D), which assembled a quick reaction force of additional ALP and Afghan Uniformed Police.
“The OCC-D is an important piece for security in this area,” said Azam. “We can now coordinate our operations and communications throughout the district and that is very important for the future security of Qara Bagh.”
Before the quick reaction force arrived, ALP from a nearby checkpoint arrived on the scene and began maneuvering on the insurgents’ fighting locations. By the time the backup element arrived on the scene, the insurgents had begun to flee the scene and moved towards the nearby village of A’in.
“The ALP program in Qara Bagh is very successful and the Taliban know this as well,” said Azam. “The ALP grow stronger every day and I want the people of Qara Bagh to know that we will help them and we will protect them when they need us.”
Ten insurgents were killed in the attack, including one mid-level Taliban leader. The ALP recovered three enemy motorcycles, two AK-47s, and one rocket-propelled grenade from the engagement.
One AUP was wounded in the attack and no damage was reported. The wounded AUP is expected to make a full recovery.
The A’in village checkpoint provides security in an area of Ghazni province commonly used by insurgents to initiate attacks on the local population.
“The checkpoint was attacked by many insurgents, but the ALP in this district are strong,” said Mohammad Azam, the Qara Bagh ALP commander. “With their training and strength, they were able to defend the checkpoint and coordinate for reinforcements.”
ALP complement counterinsurgency efforts by assisting and supporting rural areas with limited Afghan National Security Forces presence to enable conditions for improved security, governance and development.
