SEMBACH, Germany - Gen. William Fraser, III, commander, U.S. Transportation Command, visited the Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command’s 598th Transportation Brigade in Sembach, Germany, to meet the brigade staff and receive operational updates earlier this month.

The 598th visit was part of Fraser’s command tour of numerous logistics and transportation nodes in U.S. European Command and Central Command areas of operation.

Brigade staff updated the general on European and African operational plans, brigade-level operations supporting current and future operations. The staff also gave status reports on employment of SDDC and USTRANSCOM enterprise functions in support of EUCOM and U.S. Africa Command.

During the course of the operational updates, the general provided feedback on his recent visits with the 838th and 839th Transportation Battalions. Each battalion oversees multi-modal nodes supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

“Having spent time with General Fraser in Riga, it was important to hear his views of how the strategic picture links together,” noted Lt. Col. John Gallagher, commander, 838th Trans Bn. “The missions that the brigade and both battalions are performing are making it possible to carry out our national foreign policy and military strategy.”

After the operational updates, the general and his staff toured the newly renovated brigade workspaces and met the staff and workforce of the brigade before moving on to their next commitment.

“We are honored to have the general visit us here,” said Lt. Col. Kurt Kehoe, brigade executive officer. “The entire brigade has been extremely busy with consolidating our headquarters and keeping the mission of support to EUCOM and AFRICOM.”

The 598th Transportation Brigade headquarters recently relocated from The Netherlands to Germany.

“This was a very important visit for the brigade and its workforce,” commented Col. Matthew Redding, commander, 598th Trans. Brigade, “The general and his staff helped us better understand the many challenges we will face in coming years.”
