NANGARHAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Members of the Afghan National Army special forces detained six insurgents and discovered a weapons cache after an insurgent attack in Khogyani district, Nangarhar province, May 5.

The ANASF were conducting a security patrol when the insurgents took up fighting positions and attacked them with small arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire. Afghan National Army special forces returned fire effectively, causing the insurgents to flee to a nearby building.

“We called for reinforcements and followed the insurgents to the building where they hid after their failed attack,” said an ANASF company commander. “Our first priority during the search was to ensure the safety of innocent civilians inside the building and in the immediate area.”

After entering the building, ANASF found six insurgents with AK-47s and a cache containing rocket propelled grenades, rifles, and equipment used to make homemade explosives.

The ANASF transferred the six detainees to National Directorate of Security custody for further questioning.

No civilian casualties or structural damage were reported during this engagement.

Afghan National Army special forces is an elite group that conducts high-risk counterinsurgency operations that enable conditions for improved security, governance, and development.
