MAMAIA, ROMANIA – Marines and sailors with Black Sea Rotational Force 13, along with volunteers with United Hands Romania, traveled to Idu Tennis Club in Mamaia, Romania, May 1, 2013 to spend a day with about 300 children from seven different orphanages from nearby Constanta.

“We [Untied Hands Romania] are a non-profit, non-government completely voluntary organization,” said Renee Crossman, the vice president of United Hands Romania. “The organization has been in Romania for 13 years and we, simply put, help people with problems.”
More than 300 children were present from seven different placement centers. Each placement center houses between 70 and 80 children.

“Today there was a combination of several placement centers throughout Constanta [Romania] and we were interacting with children,” said Staff Sgt. Joshua Jarman, a civil affairs Marine with BSRF-13. “It allowed us to interact with the local population and do some community relations, and it just shows another side of the Marine Corps that many people don’t see.”

Throughout the day, the Marines and sailors played several games such as tug-of-war, jump rope, potato sack races and three-legged races with children. Later in the afternoon the Marines and sailors handed out gifts donated by various local and international philanthropic organizations and helpd serve the children food.

“I had a blast,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Rosalie Carbonell. “I enjoyed playing with the small children. Seeing them and hearing them laugh really brought a smile to me.”

This is the second time Marines and sailors with Black Sea Rotational Force were able to get out and interact with the children from placement centers.

“I really enjoyed interacting with the children,” said Jarman. “Myself along with the other volunteers got a chance to play with hundreds of children, and I didn’t see one person not smile all day.”

BSRF-13 will be supporting various military engagements while also serving as a crisis contingency force for the Black Sea region. BSRF-13 is slated to conduct military engagements operations with approximately 21 different nations during its six-month deployment. During that time, BSRF will exchange and advise small unit tactics, convoy operations, live fire weapon ranges, non-lethal weapons employment and counter-improvised explosive device training.
