BAGHLAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Afghan Local Police foiled an insurgent attack near Qareh Yatim village, Chahar Darreh district, Baghlan province, April 27.

Approximately 12 insurgents fired at the local police with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades while the officers were conducting patrols near their post.

The ALP immediately reported the firefight to their commander and returned fire with the insurgents.

Afghan Uniformed Police arrived to the scene within minutes and joined the ALP in the fight. They worked together to overpower the insurgents, who ran through the woods and dispersed into a nearby village.

“They knew they could not win, so they ran and hid in the crowd,” said Maj. Maideen, the Chahar Darreh district chief of police. “If they did not run, they would have been shot, killed or arrested. We will take care of our villages from those who fight against the peace of the Afghan people and we will always make our best effort to see that no innocent people are hurt.”

Afghan Local Police complement counterinsurgency efforts by assisting and supporting rural areas with limited Afghan National Security Forces presence to enable conditions for improved security, governance and development.
