3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division

FORT KNOX, Ky. - Soldiers with the 6th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division gathered at Smith Gymnasium Apr 12 to case their unit's colors.

The ceremony symbolized the unit's upcoming deployment to Afghanistan, a deployment that is expected to help with the eventual drawdown in the region.

"These colors and our soldiers, are about to embark on another historic journey," said Lt. Col. Michael Zernickow, commander, 6th Sqdn., 4th Cav. "A journey that will add another chapter to the long and proud legacy of those who have gone before us, a journey in which we will do our part to help ensure the freedoms for the people of Afghanistan."

In preparation for the deployment, the Squadron completed a demanding training cycle that included a multi-echelon, squad and platoon-driven live fires, a validation gunnery and, most recently, a rotation at the Joint Readiness Training Center in Fort Polk, La.

"This training has prepared us well for the mission, as we will deploy into a relatively remote and austere environment," said Zernickow. "We look forward to showing what this great team is capable of and getting on with the mission we have worked so hard and long to prepare for."

During the ceremony Zernickow commented on the extensive history the 4th Cavalry holds in combat operations and how they want to continue that legacy.

"Our colors have been cased many times over the course of this great nation's history," said Zernickow. "Just as the 4th Cavalry fought with distinction during the Indian Wars, World War II, Vietnam and two previous deployments to Afghanistan, it's now our turn to make a contribution; to earn our next battle streamer and to continue building upon the 4th Cavalry's proud history of service to our Nation."

Now that the casing ceremony is over, the squadron prepares to embark on their journey to Afghanistan to meet the important missions that lie ahead.

With the possible dangers that come with any deployment, the closing remarks by the Squadron commander put many at ease as he made his confidence in his Troops known.

"The Squadron has adapted to ambiguous and changing environments, we are a trained and cohesive team and combat ready," said Zernickow. "We will execute our mission and I am confident with these soldiers, we can and we will complete our mission."
