YOKOSUKA, Japan – USO Yokosuka held a meet and greet for the female rock band, Nylon Pink, at their pier side location onboard Fleet Activities (FLEACT), Yokosuka.

The group is in the middle of their Japan tour and took some time to visit FLEACT, Yokosuka.

“We just wanted to come and support the troops out here and we’re really excited to be here,” Yu said.

According to their website, Nylon Pink is the first all female, Asian-American rock band.

Formed in 2008 in Hollywood, California, the band started primarily by lead vocalist Kaila Yu and bassist Katt Lee, and featured musicians Theresa Houston on guitar, T.J. McDonnell on the drums and DJ Shy (Karen Jin Beck) on the turntables.

The current line up consist of Kaila Yu, Katt Lee, lead guitarist Kiki Wongo, and drummer Jamie Scoles.

Their style has been described by some as “Hello Kitty on Acid” and Katy Perry crossed with Shiny Toy Guns with a Harajuku edge.

Addionally, a jewelry and fashion line inspired by their music is known as “Hello Drama,” which was founded by Kaila Yu.

Airman Nick White, assigned to USS George Washington (CVN 73), was one of the sailors who attended the meet and greet. White and Wongo carried on a lengthy conversation about rock music and guitars.

“I’m always interested in new bands and new music,” said White. “I got my guitar signed by their guitarists. We have a lot of the same interest in music and the guitar; we play the same guitar.”

Yu and Wongo said that the ships and the sailors have been among their favorite things to see during their visit to Japan. They also enjoyed seeing the cherry blossoms in full bloom.

“We didn’t know about the cherry blossoms,” said Wongo. “We found out they only bloom for about a week, so it’s really cool that we got to see and enjoy that experience as well.”

Nylon Pink’s music is comprised of musical styles ranging from rock to heavy metal and dub step to hip hop.

According to Yu, they cover songs from Brittany Spears to Korean pop artists like 2NE1 and Girls Generation, and then they put their rock, metal vibe on their music.

“We all like different things and when we infuse everything it becomes original and new,” Lee said.
