CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait — More than 400 volunteers joined together to put on the 2nd Annual Resilience Expo at the Zone 1 gym April 6 to raise awareness about services available to soldiers to increase their ability to deal with stress.

The expo kicked off at 6 a.m. with a 5k run where some soldiers ran with their units in formation, some ran in civilian clothing and a few even dressed as super heroes.

After the run, everyone had a few hours to change and eat before sign in started at 10 a.m. in the gym. While signing in, the Soldiers were given raffle tickets for a chance to win AAFES gift cards or one of two leather Harley Davidson jackets.

The booths were set up to show Soldiers all the different services provided by the different military and civilian agencies on the camp.

“This is a great event to have while we are deployed,” said Pfc. Kaliyl Muhammad, an information technology specialist with the 519th Signal Company, 54th Signal Battalion. “It’s good to know where to go or who I can talk to when I get home if I have any problems.”

After lunch, soldiers from the 38th Sustainment Brigade acted out skits using the five dimensions of resilience, which are social, emotional, spiritual, physical and family. Following the skits, Soldiers attending the event were encouraged to participate in an open microphone segment where they could perform any talent they wanted.

“This event is intended to provide soldiers with some tips and tools for their tool bag in order to be more resilient,” said Maj. Christina Dean, the 38th’s master resilience trainer officer in charge. “Resilience is something that needs to be a proactive measure not a reactive one like after a suicide attempt or ideation. I have been personally affected by suicide. My brother committed suicide when he was 25, so it’s important to me that Soldiers know that there are people they can talk to when dealing with a difficult time.”

To end the expo, the soldiers returned to the Zone 1 track to participate in Zumba where they could have some fun while working on the physical dimension of resilience.

“The expo was a great success,” said Col. Mary Colberg, chief of clinical operations for the 3rd Medical Command and coordinator of the event. “Most soldiers adapt in a few of the resilience dimensions naturally and hopefully now they’ve learned which ones they might need work on and who can help them do it.”
