Who/What: Tech. Sgt. Jo’Van Descartes was recently selected as one of Air Force District of Washington’s “Capital Airmen” for 2013. The Airmen (service members and civil servants) who are showcased in this initiative have exemplified the Air Force core values of integrity first, service before self and excellence in all they do. Descartes has an amazing story about his Air Force career, and is excited to share what it means to him to serve his country.
    Hometown: Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands
Duty Location: Joint Base Andrews, Maryland
When: Throughout 2013, AFDW Public Affairs will be sending hometown news releases to media outlets in all 50 states and U.S. territories to spread the word about the amazing jobs our Airmen are performing in the National Capital Region.

    INTERVIEWS:
To request an interview with Descartes, please contact Ms. Erika Glon at 240-612-6484.
    BACKGROUND ON HOMETOWN HERO:
Descartes joined the Air Force because he was influenced by his mentors while being a part of the JROTC at Charlotte Amalie High School. He graduated from the school in 2006 and entered the Air Force as a security forces specialist. The Air Force has proven to be the most beneficial stepping stone he could take. He wasn't sure what he wanted to do with his life but he knew he wanted something exciting and different. He wanted to travel the world, get exceptional training and education, and most importantly be a part of something bigger.

Descartes is assistant non-commissioned officer-in-charge of ceremonies and protocol for AFDW. He is responsible for planning, coordinating and executing the Air Force’s highest level of ceremonial and protocol services for the President, foreign dignitaries, congressional leaders, Department of Defense agencies, general officers and distinguished visitors. Descartes also coordinates and escorts hosts for active duty, retired and repatriated service member funerals at Arlington National Cemetery, and provides knowledge and guidance on flag, ceremonial standards and practices for Air Force units worldwide.

His background includes various duties at stateside and overseas locations, including bases in Washington, D.C., Maryland, Kuwait, Spain and Iraq. Prior to assuming his current position, he was a fire team leader at the 459 Security Forces Squadron, Joint Base Andrews, Md.
