MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. - National Rifle Association-certified training counselors came aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico to train the Marine Corps Combat Shooting Team from April 1-5.

“We are here teaching the Marines certain NRA courses,” said Ernie Padgette, president of the of the Arlington-Fairfax chapter of the Izaak Walton league of America and NRA-certified counselor. “To be able to teach these courses to the Marine Corps population, the Marines will need to be certified and that is what we are here for.”

A few of classes the Marines took included, but were not limited to, the basic instructor training class, basic pistol instructor class, and personal protection outside the home basic and instructor classes. The classes lasted 12-14 hours each.

“During the courses we honed in on three things when it came to the Marines and that was knowledge, skills and attitude,” Padgette said. “They are instructors so they have the knowledge. They are all shooters so they have the skills and they are Marines so, of course, they have the right attitude. This made it really fun and easy for us to just come in and improve on what they already know.”

Normally, each of the courses would have been $30 each person, but out of consideration for their service, the instructors thought would be a good way of giving back by not charging the Marines.
By the end of the week, 11 members of the combat shooting team became certified instructors and authorized to teach these courses.

“Many of these classes teach skills we have already acquired, but you can always pick up something,” said Sgt. Cody Nelson, instructor competitor, Marine Corps Combat Shooting Team. “Even though we are usually the trainers, as soon as you think you know everything, that is when you stop learning. So we always keep an open mind and it doesn’t hurt that the classes are good and the instructors are great.”
