BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan — Afghan officials and Bagram Provincial Reconstruction Team members broke ground on two road reconstruction projects in Parwan province May 19.

The need for the rehabilitation and paving of Bagram Village Market and Qalander Khil roads was identified by Abdul Jabbar Taqwa, Parwan province governor, to provide traffic and commerce access between local communities in each district.

"I am very happy and excited to get these projects started," said Taqwa. "The more help we can bring to the people the better. These roads will help the people move around more easily. Thanks to the help of the Bagram PRT, we can continue to help the people."

Army Maj. James Blashford, Bagram PRT civil and military affairs operations officer for Parwan and Kapisa provinces, was just as eager to see these projects underway.

"Today, we break ground on another important project in the future of this great province," said Blashford. "A strong road system is key to the growth of a community. Roads assist in security, communication and development. I believe these roads are symbolic of the progress by the Afghan government."

The $407,272 rehabilitation of Bagram Village Market road consists of the paving of 900 meters (2,700 feet) of the road, the building of a raised planter median with 18 solar-powered street lamps, as well as parking spaces to accommodate up to 300 vehicles.

Qalander Khil road will be paved between two villages approximately 11.6 kilometers (7.2 miles) long, costing $434,420.

The reconstruction of the two roads is scheduled for completion later this year.
