FORT BLISS, Texas – Mayor John Cook proclaimed April as the Month of the Military Child for El Paso, Texas, during an open city council meeting at the El Paso Public Library, April 2.
Although the original designation was made nationally in 1986 by Secretary of Defense Caspar W. Weinberger, this annual proclamation shows El Paso’s support of its neighboring military community, said Deborah Trexler, director of youth education for Child, Youth and School Services, here.
“As we embark on the Month of the Military Child, we are excited about celebrating the sacrifices and contributions of our youngest heroes, our military youth,” said Trexler. “El Paso has welcomed our military families in such a way that this is not just a place we live, but a place we can call home.”
Representatives from Fort Bliss’ Army Community Service, Better Opportunity for Single Soldiers, Better Opportunity for Single Parents, CYSS and Sergeant Audie Murphy Club were at the meeting with their children and received a handshake from the city council members as a show of appreciation.
“I just want to thank all of the military service members and their children for all of their sacrifices,” said Cook.
As an additional display of support, the mayor offered to sign the absentee slip for any military child who attended the council meeting. One military child who witnessed the proclamation commented on how good it felt to be recognized.
“It’s kind of cool because my mom and dad are in the military and they work hard,” said Hailey Franco, the 11-year old daughter of Sgts. 1st Class Charity and Joseph Franco, Fort Bliss soldiers. “I’m proud of them.”
Events are planned throughout the entire month across El Paso and Fort Bliss to show support to children like Hailey, who endure for their country. Events include things such as toy giveaways, bowling specials and marches to raise awareness.
