Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, S.C. - The months from April through September have the highest suicide rates amongst Marines, making it important to be especially observant during these months.

Jeanette L. Smith, the new Tri-Command suicide prevention specialist, is available to meet with large or small groups to train on preventing these types of incidents.

The Never Leave a Marine Behind Training Program is designed to teach Marines and unit leaders the proper action to take if a Marine exhibits signs of suicide. Through the training program Marines learn the steps to recognize and aid those thinking about suicide.
Since the summer months have the highest risk of suicide it is encouraged that units offer more suicide prevention training classes during this time of the year to com¬bat the high rate. Last year only 65 percent of the Fleet Marine Force received suicide prevention training, this year’s goal is 100 percent.

The more commands discuss this issue, the more each Marine will know and pass on to their family members and fellow Marines. The more commands discuss this topic the more suicides can be prevented.

Suicide can happen to anyone and is a permanent solution to a temporary problem, said Smith. We are the first line of defense against suicide and it is preventable.

With the proper training and knowledge one can take on a situation with confidence and assure the individual receives the help that they need.

For more information, contact Jeanette Smith at 228-1569.
