KANDAHAR AIR FIELD, Afghanistan – The Morale, Welfare, and Recreation festival tent came to life as service members listened to Liquid Blue belt out some of their favorite tunes May 10.
The San Diego-based group from California rocked the house with crowd pleasers like I Love Rock and Roll, Sweet Home Alabama, and Panama. The band also took a moment to thank the troops for their service.
"You all are the reason we are here. We couldn't be more thankful to the men and women who put their lives on the line," lead vocalist Scott Stephens said. "This isn't the typical vacation spot," he said jokingly, "but we love to be able to be here for you and show our appreciation."
The crowd came to a hush when the Blue Girls trio performed the Star Spangled Banner a cappella.
"They were a lot of fun to watch," said Army Staff Sgt. Kimberly Francis, Task Force Grizzly. Francis is getting ready to redeploy to Alaska after serving a year in Afghanistan. "Not too many people come to Kandahar, so this was really nice. Their version of the Star Spangled Banner was just beautiful," she said.
This tour marks Liquid Blue's eighth with Armed Forces Entertainment. Other stops during their May 4 – May 24 include Bahrain, Djibouti, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Kyrgyzstan.
