KILLEEN, Texas – During a medical crisis, the Fort Hood Fisher House is a home away from home which offers an environment where families and friends of active duty, retired military personnel and veterans can nurture one another in time of need.

To assist with their needs, the Navy Federal Credit Union’s Fort Hood Branch donated $1,000 to the Fort Hood Fisher House Feb. 25 in celebration of their 10,000th member, Sgt. 1st Class Bienvenido Lopez-Torres, Company A, 4th Attack Reconnaissance Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division.

“I came looking for a better rate for my car loan,” said Lopez-Torres, an Apache Helicopter Repairer and Ponce, Puerto Rico native. “They approved it on Saturday, and I was concerned because I noticed the employees were acting a little off. I thought maybe my identity had been stolen, or they were suspicious of something.”

Within moments, the bank employees congratulated him and let him in on what the surprise was they had been hiding, said Lopez-Torres

“It turns out I was the 10,000th member, so the bank presented the generous donation to the Fisher House,” Lopez-Torres said. “It’s awesome. Me coming here not only helped save money for my payments, but indirectly I’m also helping to continue the tradition of the Fisher House and the support that they provide soldiers and family members.”

The Fisher House’s purpose is to offer families a clean, safe, low-cost respite from the stress of worrying about loved ones by providing private rooms, including kitchen and laundry rooms, at no charge to families.

While the Fisher Foundation provides the furnishing and household necessities for the Fisher House, there is still a need to raise funds to purchase consumable and comfort items for families staying in the home.

Isaac Howard, Fort Hood Fisher House manager, was in attendance for the event and received the check on behalf of his organization. Howard said donations like this are essential for the Fisher House to properly function.

“This is great for the Fisher House,” Howard said. “This money will go to help feed and serve the families. It’s very important we receive donations because we receive no federal assistance and are nonprofit. We have houses within all military bases and Veteran’s Assistance bases which need assistance, and I would encourage all individuals to donate whenever possible for a great cause.”
