Afghan leadership, US special forces meet with families of civilians killed in Kunar province
KUNAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan – U.S. special forces met with Afghan leaders and representatives of the two families who lost loved ones as a result of an engagement last week with insurgents in Kunar province by Afghan forces supported by an adjacent coalition force, Feb. 18.
U.S. special forces have a vested interest in the area and are concerned for the residents in the province who were affected by the operation. A special forces team met with Afghan leaders and family members and offered condolence payments in recognition of their loss.
The provincial governor, provincial chief of police, national directorate of security chief and U.S. special forces met with family members at the Kunar provincial headquarters to express their deepest condolences for their loss due to this tragic event. Sayed Fazlullah Wahidi, governor of Kunar province, thanked U.S. special forces for coming to meet with the victims’ families, and expressed gratitude for their condolence payments.
“This unfortunate event was the result of the al-Qaida’s complete disregard for the safety of civilians while carrying out attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. Although we were not involved in the assault, Special Operations Task Force-East has provided payment to the families of the victims to help lessen their pain during this tragic time,” said Special Operations Task Force-East commander Lt. Col. Christopher J. Fox. “As we move forward, we would like to maintain a positive relationship with the people of Kunar province, and are committed to assisting Afghan forces to increase stability, governance and development.”
