YOKOSUKA, Japan - The Morale, Welfare and Recreation Teen and Youth Club on Fleet Activities, Yokosuka held a grand opening for its computer lab, Feb. 14. The lab will give school-aged children that visit the club access to new technology.

The lab opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony with Fleet Activities, Yokosuka Capt. David Owen, club leadership and children that visit the club. A party with chicken wings and cookies followed afterwards. The children didn’t pay much attention to the food as they immediately entered the computer lab and started using the computers.

“It’s the result of a months worth of work,” said Brett Meehan, teen and youth club coordinator. “We got the money to refurbish the room and purchase the computers through a grant from the Boys and Girls Club of America [BGCA].”

The previous club coordinator filed the application for the grant. Meehan and other workers got the room ready and fulfilled other conditions of the grant before the club could be approved to use the money.

“The specific grant we got was $10,000 for the game technology program. It allowed us to purchase the computers, software and improve the room,” said Meehan. “We used every last dime and really made this a great place for them to learn and use the computers.”

The software on the computers allows the children to build new and interact with existing games built on the game software.
It also gives the students access to the Internet and a place to do their computer-based homework.

“I’ve always loved computers and computer games and now I can make them. That’s going to be fun,” said Levi Ferguson, frequenter of the club. “It’s also good if we have to do research for a school project. Before we had to go to the library if we wanted to use a computer. Now we can use these ones. I think it’s going to be lots better.”

According to Meehan, he plans to continue to seek out different projects that will improve the teen and youth club.

His next plan is to update the music room with newer equipment possibly through another grant from the BGCA.
