FORWARD OPERATING BASE APACHE, Afghanistan- Afghan National Army soldiers of the Second Mobile Strike Force, 205th Corps, were tested on their counter improvised explosive device (C-IED) training skills at Forward Operating Base Eagle Feb. 21.
The training tested the unit’s ability to identify an improvised explosive device (IED), as well as the tactics, techniques and procedures used upon discovering an IED. Soldiers also showed their ability to employ metal detectors to find IEDs.
“Their ability to clearly identify IEDs and cordon them off until their explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team can respond is what can save the lives not only of the Afghan soldiers, but the civilians, too,” said U.S. Army Sgt. Matthew R. Waire, team sergeant, 162nd Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company, 3rd Ordnance Battalion, Task Force Paladin, Third Infantry Division.
During their two-stage training course, the soldiers were faced with multiple simulated IEDs. The course afforded the trainees the opportunity to detect and identify the devices. Second MSF soldiers were first assessed on their ability to utilize metal detectors to locate an IED.
The second stage included a practical exercise of dismounted operations during a convoy. They used their training on the metal detectors to find IEDs and then practiced containing the area. Once this all-important step was completed, a simulated unexploded ordnance report was sent up to higher headquarters.
“I am actually extremely impressed at their eagerness to learn and how effective they are at this stage in the training,” Sgt. Waire said.
The training also tested the soldiers’ knowledge regarding the types of IEDs that can be found on the battlefield. They will continue to train on C-IED measures to better prepare them as they move towards Afghan independence.
“It was very good, and with the help of you guys (Army EOD Team) it went very good, and we learned a lot from you guys,” said Afghan National Army Sgt. 1st Class Zafar Mohamet, an engineer platoon sergeant, assigned to the Second Mobile Strike Force, 205th Corps.
