PLYMOUTH, Mass. – Massachusetts National Guardsmen have been busy assisting local communities throughout Massachusetts to prepare for, endure and recover from a winter storm.
Among the Guardsmen helping out in Plymouth and Marshfield were members of Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 182nd Infantry Regiment, Massachusetts Army National Guard. The 182nd was helping to cut fallen trees to clear roads for emergency vehicles.
“We have been using chainsaws to clear trees from roads but we are limited to cutting trees that are not touching power lines,” said 1st Lt. Kyle Ferrier, Delta Company. “We have been responding to calls of downed trees and if we can’t cut it we help classify what type of crew might need to be called and then we report it to the DPW. So we’re doing a lot scouting to help them out,” said Ferrier.
The 182nd returned from a tour in Afghanistan in 2012 and is regularly called on to support the commonwealth during emergencies.
“Members of our company were trained and certified to operate chainsaws during Hurricane Sandy to add an additional capability to emergency response situations,” said Ferrier.
The soldiers from Delta Company have been busy during the storm.
“Last night we were in Marshfield and set up cots for all the people staying in a shelter. Today we were cutting up trees all day but the chains stopped working so we came here to fix them,” said Spc. Chris Delano, Delta Company.
After a long day of cutting up fallen trees, Delano and his team quickly disassembled and repaired the chainsaws and got back on the road to continue the mission to help keep them clear. They cut down some more trees, helped another crew pull debris from the road and called the DPW to report a potentially dangerous tree and broken tree that was of concern to some homeowners.
The Massachusetts National Guard has a long history of helping the community and during this storm the Guard helped rescue stranded motorists, helped people evacuate their homes, and even helped a mother deliver her baby girl and get to the hospital safely.
