FORT STEWART, Ga. – Soldiers and Family members from the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division came together from around the country through the internet and Defense Connect Online for Fort Stewart’s first live broadcast of a pre-deployment briefing on Jan. 23.
The live broadcast was designed to reach the many family members who are not able to attend one of the several pre-deployment briefings the Vanguard Brigade is hosting on Fort Stewart.
One of the event’s organizers, Lt. Col John R. Allen, the 4th IBCT’s deputy commanding officer said, “Everyone couldn't thank us enough for the privilege and opportunity to receive the brief on-line.”
“Based upon our success and the low overhead for conducting such a powerful venue, we're looking at conducting virtual home detachment Family Readiness Group Town Hall Meetings while we're deployed as well,” he added.
Col. Kimo C. Gallahue, the brigade’s commander, briefed 34 families from across the country via the internet and roughly 130 soldiers and family members who were physically present during the brigade’s consolidated and “live broadcast”. People logged in from 10 different states including California and New York.
The live broadcast included audio and video of Col. Gallahue, a slide presentation and the ability to chat directly with Lt. Col. Allen, all in real time.
The briefing provided family members valuable information about the unit’s upcoming deployment to Afghanistan including the living conditions the soldiers can expect, their deployment timeline and how family members will be able to communicate with their soldiers once deployed.
Defense Connect Online provides Department of Defense users worldwide with a suite of collaboration tools free of charge. Services include web conferencing, virtual meetings, and chat services that can be accessed virtually anywhere.
The brigade is scheduled to deploy between February and March to Regional-Command East in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
