    MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. – The 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing’s leaders kicked off 2013 by launching the Committed and Engaged Leadership Campaign that aims to improve its operational tempo.

    “The [campaign] is for leaders at all levels to understand their responsibility to the institution and to those they lead,” said Maj. Gen. Steven Busby, commanding general of 3rd MAW.

    Goals of the campaign include supporting Marines who are forward and managing complex transitions within the wing.

    One transition is the replacement of several legacy aircraft with the F-35B Lightning II. The importance of ensuring that Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 121 is set up for success and succeeds with the new joint strike fighter, explained Busby.

    The Marines of VMFA-121 were honored with the distinction of becoming the Marine Corps’ first F-35B squadron during a ceremony aboard MCAS Yuma, Ariz., Nov. 20, 2012.

    In support of the campaign, senior enlisted leaders gathered for the semi-annual Sergeants Major Symposium.

    “It is a chance to bring together the sergeants major, selected master gunnery sergeants, master sergeants and first sergeants from across all of 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing for two days to present various topics that are pertinent to our continued Professional Military Education as senior enlisted leaders,” said Sgt. Maj. Anthony Spadaro, sergeant major of 3rd MAW.

    The topics include updates on the Sexual Assault Prevention Program, recognizing physical and mental issues in Marines, sailors and family members and developing ideas and recommendations for the Committed and Engaged Leadership Campaign.

    “[We] discuss issues like [driving under influence], domestic violence and sexual assaults. Those numbers are disturbing so we’re embarking on campaign to make sure we all understand our responsibilities as engaged leaders,” said Busby.

    More than 75 percent of the 3rd MAW senior enlisted leaders attend the symposium to share ideas and promote the campaign.

    Through this campaign and events like the symposium, senior enlisted leaders hope to assign more control to all levels of leadership, particularly at the noncommissioned officer and staff noncommissioned officer levels, added Spadaro.

    The commanding general’s intent is that this campaign helps mold proficient leaders for the future of the wing.

    “We cannot allow each other to fall, and we’re going to find some ways for people to take ownership, lead and make a difference,” said Busby.
