HINESVILLE, Ga. – Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, joined more than 100 other groups to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day by participating in Liberty County’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade, Jan. 21, in Hinesville, Ga.
One of the parade’s organizers, Kenneth K. Howard, second vice president of the Liberty County Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Observance Association, said, “It is a privilege and an honor to serve in this capacity. Dr. King is probably one of the most influential African-American figures in the world, and I don’t think we can realistically celebrate African-American history without having him at the forefront.”
“We must continue to tell the story of the significance of African-American history in this world, and in these United States of America,” he added.
Participants in the parade included various churches, community groups, bands, ROTC programs from local high schools and colleges, and municipal leaders from throughout the county.
Lt. Col. Lee T. Overby, the battalion commander of 1/76 FA, and Command Sgt. Maj. Joseph D. Goodwater, the battalion command sergeant major, led their soldiers from the parade’s starting point at the Bradwell Institute, to the reviewing stand, where they took their seats as honorary marshals of the parade.
The parade was one of many held around the country this weekend, which leads into African-American history month in February.
Soldiers from 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 4th IBCT, 3rd Inf. Div., also participated in a parade in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 19, in Glennville, Ga.
