News: Radio show helps public ‘talk with heroes’
Story by Capt. Marvin Baker
KABUL, Afghanistan — Family and friends of Task Force Centurion troops embraced a new way of publicly expressing thanks and gratitude for their soldiers’ service recently.
A new Internet radio show called “Talking with Heroes” encourages friends and family members of soldiers to call the show and “shout-out” their enthusiastic support to service members. The show is hosted by Bob Calvert.
“The ‘Talking with Heroes’ program is not about politics, said Calvert. “We are about helping, honoring and supporting our men and women in the military and their families. We give our military personnel an opportunity to share their mostly untold stories about the work they are doing worldwide. We believe that the American people have a right to hear their positive progress stories and our military personnel have a right to have their stories heard.”
The show’s host started the weekly program during the height of the Iraq war and has embedded as media several times in Afghanistan and Iraq in the past to cover units’ missions. Now, Mr. Calvert doesn’t travel overseas anymore because of a recent injury he said, but runs the show live in front of an audience at an American Legion post in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Loris Swanson Jones, the mother of a Task Force Centurion soldier said, “This was a great opportunity for everyone to hear from our soldiers in a public forum.” During a recent broadcast, Jones and other family members from Texas spoke to Spc. Kelsie Condo, a Texas Army National Guard soldier stationed in Kabul, Afghanistan, during a recent broadcast.
Since the show launched last month, 12 Task Force Centurion soldiers, on two separate occasions discuss the unit’s work including building Afghan police capabilities, investing in women’s economic inclusion in Kabul and increasing Afghans’ access to education and literacy.
