FORT BLISS, Texas – Brrrrr!!! With the arrival of old man winter, many people will break out their winter jackets to protect themselves from the bitter winds and freezing temperatures. For those without jackets or blankets, employees from Delta Airlines and members from Sgt. Audie Murphy Club, SAMC, Fort Bliss held a coat drive at the Delta Airlines warehouse Dec. 1.
This is the first year that SAMC members teamed up with Delta in the coat drive but SAMC members are always looking for avenues to become more involved in their surrounding community, according to Staff Sgt. Robert Turner, dental technician, Chambers Dental Clinic.
“By assisting Delta, the coat drive gave the SAMC members an opportunity to maximize its resources in the surrounding community,” said Sgt. 1st Class Clinton L. Lochabay, noncommissioned officer-in-charge, Chambers Dental Clinic. “By teaming up with other organizations we were able to have a greater impact in fulfilling the needs of the community here and able to contribute to the victims of Hurricane Sandy.”
“I saw a volunteering opportunity to help out in the community,” said Turner. “Being involved with SAMC opened the door for more opportunities to volunteer in the El Paso community.”
The soldiers were able to collect hundreds of blankets and coats throughout the Fort bliss community to add to what the Delta employees had collected from the drive at the warehouse.
Half of the blankets and coats from the drive went to homeless shelters throughout the El Paso community and the other half went to aide the victims of Hurricane Sandy in New York and New Jersey.
“It was good to bring two groups together for the betterment of the community, it brings the community closer together,” said Sandra G. Medrano, performance leader, Delta Airlines.
“Delta does this every year. This year was special because the Army has joined us to help with the coat drive,” added Medrano. “We have a small presence here and with the Army helping us it had really made an impact on the community. The generosity shown by the Army was enormous.”
The SAMC is a private U.S. Army organization for enlisted non-commissioned officers who exemplify the qualities and virtues of performance and leadership demonstrated by Sgt. Audie Murphy, according to their official website.
