YORBA LINDA, Calif. - Marines with I Marine Expeditionary Force participated in the Richard Nixon Centennial Birthday Celebration at the Pat Nixon Amphitheater, Richard Nixon Presidential Library, in Yorba Linda, Calif., Jan. 6.
The celebration was organized by the Richard Nixon Foundation to commemorate the life and presidency of the late former President Richard Nixon who would be celebrating his 100th birthday Wednesday, Jan. 9th. Nixon was born in Yorba Linda 100 years ago and died in 1994.
“On this centennial of his birthday, we miss him more than ever,” said Bruce Herschensohn, a former speechwriter for President Nixon and a guest speaker at the event. “We miss his character, his courage, his goodness.”
Maj. Gen. Melvin Spiese, the deputy-commanding general of I Marine Expeditionary Force, provided remarks on Nixon’s impact on the armed forces.
“There are Marines present where ever the president goes, so I think it’s only fitting to have Marines here at President Nixon’s 100th,” Spiese said. “Our presence here is absolutely right and appropriate.”
Marine Attack Squadron 311, Marine Aircraft Group 13, added to the celebration with four AV-8B Harrier fighter jets, which flew over the audience, while the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Band provided ceremonial music. Marines with 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, fired a three-volley salute in Nixon’s memory and 1st Marine Logistics Group provided the color guard.
The participating Marines spent much of their recent free time rehearsing and preparing for the event.
“I thought it was a unique experience,” said 2nd Lt. Nathan Blackwell, a platoon commander with 3/1. “It was a really good time and we’re glad we could participate. My Marines all volunteered to do it and they had good attitudes about it.”
