Petty Officer 2nd Class Robert W. Polt, fire controlman, radar system controller for the Pearl Harbor based guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Erie, is awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal by Adm. Timothy J. Keating, commander of U.S. Pacific Command, during an awards ceremony on board Lake Erie at Naval Station Pearl Harbor. Polt received the award for his participation in Operation Burnt Frost, Feb. 2 to 22. During the operation, Lake Erie Sailors orchestrated an unprecedented intercept of a malfunctioning satellite by utilizing a modified Standard Missile-3 and the AEGIS weapons system, which resulted in the destruction of the satellite. The Defense Meritorious Service Medal is the third-highest award bestowed upon service members by the Department of Defense.
