U.S. Army Sgt. Jacob Smith, a combat medic with the 915th Forward Resuscitative Surgical Detachment, 313th Hospital Center, 2nd Medical Brigade, examines a blood sample containing malaria parasites under a microscope during the Angola Medical Readiness Exercise at Hospital Militar Principal, Luanda, Angola, Sept. 4, 2026. Examining malaria samples gave U.S. medical professionals practical exposure to a disease prevalent in tropical environments, strengthening their ability to recognize regional health threats and prepare to provide care during crisis-response operations in unfamiliar environments. The MEDREX enhanced the medical readiness and capabilities of U.S. and Angolan military medical personnel.
