While every U.S. Army National Guardsmen develop their skills in land environments, one District of Columbia National Guard unit also learns combat water survival techniques for its mission, a practice not customary for them until 2026. It’s the Maritime Operations Detachment, part of the 547th Transportation Company. 1st Lt. Curran LaChappelle, an infantry officer with Headquarters Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 121st Infantry Regiment, 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Georgia Army National Guard, currently advises Guardsmen on water-survival and maritime operations training. LaChappelle and the MOD serve in Joint Task Force-DC in support of the DC Safe Beautiful mission.
