A plaque commemorating the surrender ceremony on board the USS Missouri (BB 63), designed and created at the Naval Gun Factory, Washington Navy Yard, D.C, in September 1945, and installed in situ at the site of surrender by October 1945. The plaque is a brass disk with worn but legible raised lettering after years of polishing. It reads; "Over this spot on 2 September 1945 the instrument of formal Surrender of Japan to the Allied Powers was signed thus bringing to a close the Second World War / The ship at that time was at anchor in Tokyo Bay". Lettering around the perimeter of the plaque reads, "U.S.S. Missouri / Latitude 35 (degrees) 21' 17" North - Longitude 139 (degrees) 45' 36" East." Located at the Washington Navy Yard, Naval History and Heritage Command, NHHC, serves the nation by preserving, analyzing, and presenting an accurate naval history to enhance the U.S. Navy's warfighting capability. As the Navy's institutional memory and knowledge foundation, NHHC supports the fleet with professional research, analysis, and interpretive services that reflect the Navy's enduring contributions to American maritime history. To deliver these services, NHHC manages 10 museums and collections containing approximately 1 million historic photos, 490,000 artifacts, and 186 million pages of archival records. The command also protects lost ships and aircraft, maintains the iconic USS Constitution and Historic Ship Nautilus while educating Sailors and the public on America’s rich naval history and heritage.
