Norfolk Naval Shipyard’s (NNSY) USS John Warner (SSN-785) hot operations test program recently completed two-and-a-half weeks early due to the combined efforts of the Nuclear Engineering and Planning Department’s Nuclear Test Engineering Division (Code 2340) and the Engineering and Planning Department’s Test Engineering Division (Code 246). The teams worked together around the clock, seven days a week to support timely completion of the Virginia-class submarine’s Extended Drydocking Selected Restricted Availability (EDSRA). While coordinating as a shipyard team, the codes provided clear, consistent communication and extensive training to the submarine’s crew to ensure hot operations were conducted safely. During an availability of a nuclear-powered warship like USS John Warner, inspections and checks are performed on nuclear and non-nuclear propulsion plant systems before proceeding with resuming plant operations. With Virginia-class submarines forming the backbone of our nation’s silent service, NNSY and the John Warner project team have been committed to a timely delivery back to the fleet, and the early completion of the hot ops test program is a significant step towards reaching this goal.
