A member of the Fort William Henry Guard fires a reproduction 18th century cannon following the promotion of New York Army Major Alex Hammond by Major General Ray Shields, the adjutant general of New York, at the Fort William Henry Museum in Lake George Village, New York on August 25, 2026. Hammond asked to have his promotion ceremony at the Fort William Henry Museum because he loved going there as a boy. The replica of the 1757 fort was rebuilt on the site of the August 1757 siege of Fort William Henry which figures in James Fenimore Cooper’s classic book “Last of the Mohicans.” ( U.S. Army photo SFC Andrew Valenza )
