260820-N-N1526-1003 (Aug. 20, 2026) FALLS CHURCH, Va. A scanned photo originally taken on Aug. 4, 1967, shows, from left, retired Capt. James F. Buckner and Capt. Robert Hermann, the Corps Chief, posing for a photo near a cake during the Navy Medical Service Corps 20th anniversary ball held at the officer’s club at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Buckner, who first enlisted as a hospital corpsman, retired in 1966 and held the distinction of having the longest continuous period of active duty at 43 years. Formal military balls are a time-honored tradition designed to build camaraderie and celebrate history. The photograph is housed at the U.S. Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery archives in Falls Church, Virginia. (U.S. Navy courtesy photo)
