Construction is underway on the Comite River Diversion Structure, located at the eastern end of the diversion channel where it connects to the Comite River.
At the entrance to the diversion is a control structure designed to divert flood flows from the Comite River into the new diversion channel, which will carry the water approximately 12 miles toward the Mississippi River.
To build the foundation for this massive structure, the contractor is driving piles deep into the ground in a carefully planned pattern. So far, over 900 of the 2,245 piles planned for the diversion structure have been driven.
Once the pile installation is complete, concrete will be placed to form the foundation and support the diversion structure.
One pile at a time, this major flood risk reduction project is taking shape.
