Rear Adm. David Faehnle, right, commandant of Naval District Washington (NDW), thanks the Marines and Sailors of the Chemical Biological Incident Response Force (CBIRF), for their outstanding service to the Nation and community during a June 30 visit to Naval Support Facility (NSF) Indian Head. Faehnle reserved special praise for CBIRF Gunnery Sgts. Michael Alfaro, left, and Scott Rudock, center, for their courageous actions during a June 13 fire at a duplex in installation housing. Upon seeing smoke, the Marines rushed inside the residence and searched for victims using the skills they acquired at CBIRF and throughout their Marine Corps careers. On the second floor of one of the residences, the Marines encountered a minor with special needs and a young dog which refused to leave the victim’s side. The gunnery sergeants first safely carried the minor out of the burning structure. As conditions inside the duplex worsened, they returned into the structure a second time to retrieve the victim’s dog and the family cat.
