Naval Support Activity South Potomac (NSASP) bids farewell to our dedicated Public Works Department Officer, Cmdr. Angel Aviles on June 19. After nearly 20 years of honorable service, he now continues his Naval career at a new assignment that will further strengthen his leadership foundation and present new challenges to overcome.
Aviles arrived at NSASP from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 133 in Gulfport, Mississippi. He reflects on how his two years here shaped his growth as a leader:
“Once I got here I learned that it is a very challenging location and it actually forced me to get really good at being a PWO; it is not a job that you can just show up to work and like sneak by and don’t do work. You have two DPWOs that are really demanding, a lot of personnel under your belt - almost 400 people under your belt - that you are in charge of that are going to demand good leadership out of you, and so I had to step up very quickly. I did my best to represent and make the installation the best that we can both Captain Nadder and Captain Townsend, so I will depart knowing that I gave 100 percent to the installation all the time and never took off my South Potomac hat. I will always stand ready to support the installation. It is a small staff but it is a mighty staff we have been able to do a lot of things in the past two years, so it has been a very good experience. I appreciate everything and I wish you all good luck; the installation is in good hands and you can always count on PWD to support all the endeavors of the installations.”
From the entire NSASP team, we wish Commander Aviles the very best as he reports to his next duty station. ( U.S. Navy photo by CS2 Carly McGuffey)
