LIMA, Peru (May 20, 2026) U.S. Ambassador to Peru, Bernie Navarro, visited with staff at the Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) SOUTH laboratory in Iquitos, Peru. Peruvian nationals comprise a large portion of NAMRU SOUTH’s staff, providing their insight and expertise to support the health and readiness of the United States, Peru and other partner nations in the SOUTHCOM area of responsibility. NAMRU SOUTH, part of Navy Medicine Research & Development, conducts research, surveillance and studies of vaccines, therapeutic agents, diagnostic assays and vector control measures in the SOUTHCOM Area of Responsibility to better prevent and treat infectious diseases in support of Navy, Marine Corps and joint U.S. warfighter health, readiness and lethality.
