Vice Adm. Johnny Wolfe Jr. (left), the director for Portfolio Acquisition Executive (PAE) Strategic Systems Programs (SSP), serves as the keynote speaker at the Strategic Deterrent Coalition 12th Annual Symposium in Alexandria, Va., on May 5, 2026. Wolfe spoke about PAE SSP serving as the Navy’s silent guardians for the past 70 years, providing the nation with critical sea-based strategic deterrence capabilities. He also highlighted the importance of collaboration across the services, including the Navy’s work with the Air Force in support of the nuclear triad, and reminded members of the audience to challenge old assumptions and embrace new methods in the spirit of innovation.
PAE SSP is responsible for sustaining the strategic weapon system on the Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines and supporting the integration of the D5LE weapon system on the new Columbia-class SSBNs. Looking to the future, SSP is actively modernizing the sea-based leg of the nuclear triad through the development of the D5LE2 SWS and pioneering regional strike capabilities of the future through development of the nuclear-armed sea launched cruise missile and the non-nuclear hypersonic conventional prompt strike system.
