CORPU CHRISTI ARMY DEPOT, Texas (April 27, 2026) — Today is also Earth Day, and Corpus Christi Army Depot personnel played a key role earlier this month in a hazardous substance training exercise hosted by Naval Air Station Corpus Christi.
The annual Hazardous Substance Incident Response Management field exercise simulated a small-scale spill to test coordinated response efforts and reinforce environmental stewardship. The event highlighted the critical importance of preventing chemical or oil spills from entering drainage systems or the surrounding environment.
The exercise demonstrated interagency teamwork between CCAD and NASCC environmental leadership. CCAD participants included Roy Hollins, director of Facilities and Engineering Services; Peggy V. Hatcher, environmental division chief; Steven Churchman, environmental compliance branch chief; Ramiro Salinas, environmental services branch chief; Chris Calderon, hazardous waste handler; Richard Lucio, safety specialist; and Juan Hernandez, emergency management specialist.
The team managed the incident response at the spill site, demonstrating the depot’s capabilities in prevention, containment, and control. Key response protocols included evaluating threats to human life, evacuating the area, stopping the spill at its source, and using proper absorbents from assigned spill kits.
“This annual drill simulated a hazardous material spill and tested our joint readiness to protect our environment and community,” said Peggy V. Hatcher. “It also provided invaluable experience to reinforce environmental protocols.”
