Malgaigne’s patellar hook, manufactured by Maison Lüer of Paris, France, in 1873. Surgeons used this orthopedic device to treat patella fractures. The handle tightened the hooks on the clamp. M-129.00067 (National Museum of Health and Medicine Photo by Chuck Kennedy) Extended: This instrument consisted of two pairs of bifurcated sharp forks that could be tightened with a screw. One pair pivoted to ensure secure attachment to the irregularly shaped patella. One pair of forks was placed against the lower portion of the patella and the other against the upper portion; then the surgeon pushed both the forks and the fragments together.
