This April 11, we honor the legacy and significance of the U.S. Submarine Force. In 1900, the U.S. Navy acquired its first modern submarine, the USS Holland (SS-1), marking a pivotal moment in naval history. This event launched the "Silent Service," a community known for its bravery, skill, and crucial role in our nation's defense.
From the daring patrols of World War II to the advanced capabilities of today's nuclear-powered fleet, submariners have consistently operated at the tip of the spear, ensuring security from the depths of the ocean.
During WWII, U.S. submarines sank 30% of the enemy's naval force and 60% of their merchant ships, a victory that came at a high cost, with the Submarine Force suffering the highest casualty rate of any U.S. service branch.
Here at Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY), we are immensely proud of our role in keeping the submarine fleet "fit to fight." Our skilled and dedicated workforce performs vital maintenance, repairs, and modernization on these complex vessels, from Los Angeles-class to the latest Virginia-class submarines. This critical "cradle-to-grave" support ensures that these powerful assets are ready for any mission, anywhere in the world.
We salute the generations of submariners who have served with courage and distinction. Your commitment to excellence and willingness to face the unique challenges of undersea warfare are an inspiration to us all.
