Gen. Gregory Guillot, commander, North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM), gathers for a photo with USNORTHCOM Dual Status Commander (DCS) Training Course attendees at the NORAD and USNORTHCOM headquarters building on Peterson Space Force Base, Colo., February 5, 2026. During the course, Army and Air Force National Guard and active-duty members learned how they would fit into the USNORTHCOM chain of command if they were activated to fill the DSC role. The National Defense Authorization Act, signed in December 2011, facilitated the use of DSCs to provide unity of effort between state and federal forces in achieving common objectives during disaster response, or in support of a national event.
