“Cancer is a readiness issue,” says Dr. Craig D. Shriver, director of the John P. Murtha Cancer Center (MCC) at Walter Reed and the MCC Research Programs (MCCRP) at the Uniform Services University. A retired colonel in the U.S. Army, Shriver added that more than 1,500 active-duty service members are diagnosed with cancer annually among “the healthiest, generally young, and most active of the nation’s population." But he notes that the MCC, the Department of War's only Center of Excellence for cancer care, is a leader in research, diagnosis, and treatment.
