A small-scale wind turbine with three blades is mounted on a tall white pole atop a grassy hill under an overcast sky. The turbine is equipped with a red warning light on top of the nacelle and an anemometer mounted on a lateral arm partway up the mast. A small equipment enclosure and wooden fence are visible at the base of the turbine on the hilltop.

Japanese contractors recently constructed one of the Department of Defense’s first wind turbines in Japan adjacent to Building 1 on Camp Foster. The turbine will generate clean power and help reduce Marine Corps Base Camp Smedley D. Butler’s carbon footprint and utility costs. (Photo by Lance Cpl. Brandon C. Suhr)
